The Big Bend area of Florida’s west coast is also known as the Nature Coast. The beaches are smaller and often require a long drive across salt marshes and oak hammocks to reach. This little beach is at the end of Fort Island Road west of the town of Crystal River and proved to be the perfect place to watch the sun set into the Gulf of Mexico.
Tolomato Lane runs two blocks – from Cordova Street to St. George Street – just south of the city gates. Although the lane has existed for centuries, most of the buildings in this photo are relatively new.
This YMCA was built by Henry Flagler at the corner of Valencia and Riberia Streets. Located about halfway between the Ponce de Leon hotel and the railway station, it served the residents of St. Augustine as well as the winter visitors. The meeting rooms, gym – and later the pool – served the community for decades until it was sold to Flagler College and demolished to be replaced with tennis courts for the students.
